Oppose Surveillance Systems

As adopted at LAMA July 2019 Convention:

Resolution:

WHEREAS, the Libertarian Party asserts that all individuals have the right to exercise sole dominion over their own lives, and have the right to live in whatever manner they choose, so long as they do not forcibly interfere with the equal rights of others; and that they should be free to live their lives free from government oversight and interference, and has codified this principle in the Platform of the Libertarian Party, which states “Libertarians advocate individual privacy and government transparency. We are committed to ending government’s practice of spying on everyone.”

WHEREAS, the government has instituted policies of surveillance by implementing cameras and recording devices in public spaces to collect video documentation on individuals without their consent or without legal warrants; and are actively seeking to implement facial recognition technologies to match individuals in these recordings to records maintained in other government data systems .

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts opposes the use of government surveillance and collection of data on individuals obtained without a legal warrant, and opposes the use of facial recognition technologies; and that the Libertarian Party of Massachusetts applauds the Somerville City Council for passing a ban on the use of facial recognition technology in police investigations and public surveillance programs.
